Crew may abandon unseaworthy dredger

Sat Jun 01 18:00:15 CEST 2019 Timsen

32 distressed sailors may abandon the "Omkara Prem" off Porbandar as the dredger was not seaworthy and its life-saving equipment, signalling lamp, engine etc. were deficient. The captain of the dredger had issued an 'abandon ship' on May 30, 2019. On May 30 the Mercantile Marine Department's (MMD) representatives surveyed the vessel. In their report MMD remarked that the dredger was not seaworthy, short of fuel, in blackout condition during the night, with no safety or navigational equipment running. Moreover, the crew was running short of provisions and were rationing the food. Mercator asked to cast off the vessel for dredging operations once bunkering has been completed. But the vessel has been detained on the orders of MMD Surveyor (Jamnagar) and has been detained in port.

Man dies in dredger ship tank at Western India Shipyard at Mormugao

Tue Jun 04 10:28:42 CEST 2013 arnekiel

A 45-year-old mechanical fitter allegedly died of suffocation after he entered the tank of a dredger Omkara to clean it at the Western India Shipyard Limited (WISL) dry dock at Mormugao port on Monday evening (June 3, 2013). Three mechanical fitters went down to clean the tank of dredger Omkara which had come to the WISL on May 28. While the cleaning was going on two of them came running outside shouting for help when the third person Ramesh Sharma, a native of Uttar Pradesh, fainted inside the tank. Sharma was immediately shifted to a private hospital at Baina where he was declared brought dead. S Paranjape, chief inspector of factories and boilers, said, "It is suspected that the deceased must have inhaled a lot of carbon dioxide due to lack of oxygen, which proved fatal for him."
