Medical assistance for injured crew member

Thu Oct 15 09:53:40 CEST 2015 Timsen

A boatcrew from the Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment medically assisted a 28-year-old male who was experiencing symptoms of a seizure aboard the "Ocean Beaut" approximately 12 miles northwest of the Columbia River entrance in the evening of Oct 13, 2015. The crew of the fishing vessel contacted Coast Guard Sector Columbia River watchstanders at approximately 8:11 p.m. reporting a crewmember was suffering from symptoms of a seizure and needed medical attention. A 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Cape Disappointment, in Ilwaco, Washington, launched to escort the vessel across the Columbia River bar and brought the vessel to the station around 11:30 p.m., where local emergency medical responders were waiting to transport the man by ambulance to Ocean Beach Hospital. At the time of the escort, the Columbia River bar conditions were reported to be 8-to-10 foot swells with 5-to-10 knot winds from the north.

The Coast Guard has issued fines to crewmembers of the fishing vessel Ocean Beaut for their part in a collison with the fishing vessel Columbia Star, Jan. 12, 2012. Though the case is on-going, the ship's master of the Ocean Beaut has been charged with negligent operation of a vessel and boating while intoxicated and may be fined $1000. The deckhand of the Ocean Beaut has been charged with refusal to submit to a drug test and negligence and may be fined $7500. Both men have since been terminated from their positions aboard the Ocean Beaut and no longer work for the vessel's owner.
