Sinking trawler abandoned
The "Novo Jundiña" issued a distress signal on Jan 10,2016, at 10.20 p.m. in the Bay of Biscay 40 mmiles off Cabo Ortegal, which was initially received by the Valentia Coastguard. The trawler reported water ingress and developed an incresing list to starboard as the pumps could not cope with the incoming water. The vessel and its crew were located 49 miles northwest of La Coruña, and that co-ordination was passed to the MRCC Finisterre shortly after. The crew of 11 abandoned the vessel and went into life rafts. The Spanish Helicopter Helimer 401 and the lifeboat "Salvamar Shaula" participated in the rescue. The helicopter hoisted the castaways within 40 minutes after the arrival around midnight. They were then taken to the Alvedro airport where paramdeics were waiting to care for them. One of them was attended for hypothermia and another with a concussion, but none of the cases was serious. Both were taken to the University Hospital of A Coruña. The rest of the crew was in good condition. The ship sank within half an hour after the crew had abandoned it. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the sinking of the ship. According to witnesses, there occurred a crack in the hull.
