Grounding off Terneuzen
On April 3, 2020, at 12.25 a.m. the 'Nicole Burmester', 1580 ts (ENI: 04811460), which had sailed from Antwerp on April 2 at 9.40 p.m., ran aground on a breakwater between the piers of the former ferry port and the east port in Terneuzen. The 'VB 4', 'Patrol' and the tug 'Multratug 22' were quickly on site. The tug attached directly to the stern. Short time later, also the 'Multratug 1' and the 'Multratug 7' also arrived on the spot, after which the 'Multratug 7' was secured on the stern. With the combined power of the tugs, the ship came off smoothly and sailed under its own power with tug escort to the eastern outer port of Termeuzem where it was berthed for an inspection and survey of the hull by divers. It turned out that the ship has suffered such damage that it has to go directly to a yard for repairs after unloading its cargo. It left port at 5.20 p.m. with own power. It was repaired in Terneuzen from April 9 to May 1. At 4.15 p.m. she left the yard, headed to Amsterdam, where she arrived on May 3 and resumed trading. The police started an investigation and found out that the skipper mistook buoy 25C for a harbour light and mistakenly thought to enter the harbour. The skipper also received an official report because of the official language. He was not fluent in both Dutch and English and this is mandatory.
