NGO ship detained by Italy after rescue operation

Tue Jun 10 12:27:29 CEST 2025 Timsen

Italian authorities detained th "Nadir" in the port of Lampedusa on Jujne 9. The vessel, belonging to the German non-governmental organization (NGO) Resqship, had previously rescued 112 people from an unseaworthy wooden boat in the Mediterranean. The rescue took place during the night of June 5-6. After the Italian authorities designated Lampedusa as a safe port for the "Nadir," the sailing vessel was detained for 20 days upon its arrival on June 8. The Coast guard also launched an investigation. Resqship was accused of ailing to promptly inform the relevant authorities in Tunisia and Libya and failing to follow instructions regarding the designated safe harbour. The NGO denies the allegations: "In fact, the Nadir followed the instructions of the Italian authorities and repeatedly contacted the MRCCs in Tunisia and Libya – without receiving a response, The allegations also ignore the fact that neither Libya nor Tunisia can be considered a safe haven for people on the move due to serious and well-documented human rights violations." During the voyage to Lampedusa, the "Nadir" was also requested to hand over some of the rescued people to an Italian patrol vessel. Since no written confirmation of this order was provided, and the "Nadir's" crew did not want to separate families, they refused this handover for safety reasons. Resqship condemned the detention of the civilian sailing vessel and described it as illegal: "This detention is not about right or wrong, but about politics. The allegations are completely unfounded, and the decision to detain the Nadir is arbitrary. Civilian sea rescue is being deliberately obstructed in order to push a political agenda."

69 migrants rescued from distressed boat

Wed May 14 12:13:21 CEST 2025 Timsen

Following a distress call from Aarmphoneofficial on the afternoon of May 12, the 'Sea Punk 1' and the 'Nadiir' found an unmaneuverable inflatable boat with 69 people on board, including four children and an unconscious blind person. The 'Sea Punk 1' was the first to arrive, distributed life jackets, and assessed the situation: In addition to severe seasickness, approximately 25 people were suffering from chemical burns. Several children were severely dehydrated, and water was already pouring into the boat. Shortly thereafter, the 'Nadir' also arrived at the scene. Together, the crews began the evacuation. One person who had jumped into the water was also rescued. All survivors received first aid and were later taken into the Italian Coast Guard, who brought them safely to Lampedusa.

NGO ship rescued 57 migrants, two toddlers and one man died

Wed May 14 11:23:08 CEST 2025 Timsen

The 'Nadir' of the German aid organization Resqship has arrived at Lampedusa on May 11, 2025, with three dead migrants on board. The victims were two toddlers, around two years old, and a man around 30 years old. 57 migrants who had set out from Libya to cross the Mediterranean to Europe have been rescued. The crew of the "Nadir" was alerted by a radio message to an overcrowded dinghy in distress near the island of Malta. The two children were already dead when the "Nadir" reached the dinghy. The man died despite resuscitation attempts. The boat's engine had failed on the high seas. Since then, the people on board have been exposed to the wind and weather. It was suspected that the children and the man died of thirst. The migrants were coming from African countries such as Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo.
