Engine failure near Hibusong Island

Wed Feb 15 10:28:13 CET 2023 Timsen

The Philippine Coast Guard in Northeastern Mindanao (PCG-NEM) and the Coast Guard Station in Dinagat Islands (CGS Dinagat) assisted the 'Petro Cara', en route from Batangas to Maco, Davao, in the waters of Hibusong Island in the Dinagat Islands province on Feb 12, 2023. The ship issued a distress call in the early morning after it encountered a main engine failure in the afternoon of Feb 11 near Hibusong Island. The master decided to drop anchor, but the vessel continued to drift six miles northeast off the coast of Hibusong Island. The CGS Dinagat immediately coordinated with the tug of the National Power Corp. for the possible towing of the distressed vessel. In the afternoon of Feb 12, CGS personnel towed the vessel to the Loreto anchorage area in Agusan del Sur, where it was moored. The PCG personnel immediately boarded the vessel to check the status of the crew, the cargoes and documents to ascertain its safety and seaworthiness. It also advised the master oto file a marine protest and secure a special permit to navigate from the Maritime Industry Authority before the departure for its next voyage.
