Cruise ship broke down off Ponza

The 'MSC World Europa' suffered a breakdown approximately eight nautical miles off the island of Ponza on the morning of Aug 25, 2025. The problem occurred at 7:25 a.m., whlle the cruise ship was sailing from Genoa to Naples with 8,585 people on board, among them 6,496 passengers and 2,089 crew members. It reported an electrical problem with its engines. Weather and sea conditions were favourable, and essential passenger services continued to be provided by the onboard generators. Two tugs have been deployed from the ports of Gioia Tauro and Naples to assist the ship. The container ship 'MSC Prosperity II,' on its way from Egypt to Civitiavecchia, had stopped and was lying near the 'MSC World Europa'.. As of 1 p.m. it wass NUC in pos. 40° 42' EN 012° 53' E. On the afternoon of Aug 25 at 3.40 p.m. the ship resumed its voyageu with own power after eight hours of repairs. It was escorted by Coast Guard patrol boats, and proceeding at a speed of approximately 15 knots. A Coast Guard helicopter was also in the area. A tug remained on site, ready to provide assistance if needed. The 'MSC World Europa' finally berthed in Naples at 6 p.m., three hours later as scheduled. It left the port again on Aug 26, next headed to Messina, where it arrived the same day, before proceeding to Valletta, where it berthed on Aug 27. Ship underway again after inspections

On Aug 26 at 3 a.m. the 'MSC World Europa' left Naples again en route to Messina. The ship had reached the port on Aug 25 thanks to a partially restored propulsion system. The Coast Guard's MRCC in Civitavecchia had been constantly monitoring the situation,, maintaining direct contact with the ship and the owner.A thorough technical inspection by specialized company technicians was carried out as soon as the ship reached its scheduled port of call. A towing operations would have lasted between 8 and 9 hours, with an arrival in Naples estimated by 9 p.m. After docking, the guests were disembarked and embarked.

Man fell over board and died

On Feb 14, 2024, an American passenger, aged 72, lost his life after falling off the 'MSC World Europa' in Valletta’s Grand Harbour in Malta, moments before its scheduled departure. Immediate efforts to rescue the man were launched, and a security VHF message was quickly issued, alerting the Armed Forces of Malta and the Civil Protection Department. The man was swiftly recovered by a life raft from the vessel, as reported by the Pilot Boat 'Foxtrot' at 4:33 p.m. The report noted the man appeared to be unconscious. The victim was transported to the hospital by 5:12 p.m. Despite rapid medical intervention and his urgent transportation to Mater Dei Hospital, the man was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The incident has led to an official inquiry by Magistrate Charmaine Galea, with police investigations currently underway to determine the details of the event.
