Sailing cancelled due to mechanical issues
The 'MSC Meraviglia' has been undergoing technical repairs after having one cruise cancelled in mid-April. Offering weeklong itineraries out of New York City, the vessel was taken out of service ahead of the sailing that was scheduled for May 11, 2025. The 'MSC Meraviglia' was in need of technical repairs due to a mechanical issue. The problem was impacting the vessel’s ability to operate at standard cruising speeds. The 'MSC Meraviglia' was set to offer a seven-night cruise to the Bahamas and Florida from its homeport at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. In addition to three days at sea, the original itinerary featured visits to Port Canaveral, Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Instead, the vessel docked in Portland (Maine), where repairs are being carried out by specialized teams. The technical issue never affected the safety of the crew and guests. The 'MSC Meraviglia' left Portland on May 17 and resumed service on May 18,, kicking off a weeklong cruise to the Bahamas and Florida. As with the cancelled cruise, the seven-night voyage features visits to Port Canaveral, Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Sailing from New York City on a year-round basis, the was offers seven-night cruises to Florida, the Bahamas and Bermuda.
Dead whale found on bow
The NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement was conducting an investigation after a dead whale was found caught on the bow of the 'MSC Meraviglia' when it approached the port in Brooklyn, New York, on May 4, 2024. The roughly 44-foot-long sei whale was towed to shore at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, for a necropsy, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez. The examination, done on May 7, found broken bones in its right flipper and evidence of tissue trauma along the right shoulder blade region. The gastrointestinal tract was full of food, as well. The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, the lead on the case, said that the whale was a mature female.
Cruise ship re-routed due to storm
The 'MSC Meraviglia' which was originally scheduled to sail to Florida and the Bahamas this week, has been rerouted to Boston for the next two days due to bad weather. The ship originally set sail from New York and docked in Boston on Dec 17, 2023. Heavy rain and strong winds were forecast in Florida and the Bahamas over the next few days. The ship will remain in Boston through Dec 19, before heading to Portland, Maine and then Saint John, Newfoundland before returning to New York.
