German container m/v saved 63 Syrian migrants

Thu Oct 10 10:53:57 CEST 2013 Timsen

On Oct 3, 2013, the "Santa Balbina" being enroute Thessaloniki -Malta headed towards a boat with Syrian migrants in pos. 35*, 59' N, 17* 50' E about 130 S miles SE of Capo Passero on request of the Italian Coastguard. At 2 a.m. the container ship reached the old f/v with 63 persons on board, among them 39 men, eight women and 16 children, the boat people having an age between 70 years and six months. They were taken on board the ship where they were accomodated and supplied with food before being transferred to a boat of the Italian Coastguard off Cape Passero on Oct 4 before the container ship proceeded to Marsaxlokk the same day. They had been underway from Alexandria to Italy and had encountered bad weather south of Greece being adrift on the derelict boat since one week.
