Danube traffic re-opened

Wed Mar 28 18:30:59 CEST 2012 Timsen

The sounding ship "Laber“ was searching for the lost anchor on the Danube, river km 2278,8 to 2278,2 on Mar 28 until 1 p.m. After the anchor gear could not be found in the waterway, this was re-opened at 2.30 p.m. for ship traffic first river upstream underneath the grounding site between km 2273,850 and 2276,400, and then for traffic at Deggendorf bound downstream, followed by ships anchoring in Fischerdorf and berthed in Helfkam. After the passage of these ships, ship traffic going river upstream from Vilshofen was allowed. The water police Passau was monitoring the scene. Though the anchor could not be traced, it was sure it was not in the waterway.

Anchor gear still lost

Wed Mar 28 10:29:55 CEST 2012 Timsen

While the "Odeon", 2801 ts (EU-No.: 02326629), on Mar 27 around 9.40 a.m. reached Linz and the barge "Elly" (EU-No.: 02324429) also was refloated in the evening of Mar 26, the Danube remained blocked for shipping between Vilshofen and Deggendorf, as the two lost 2-ton-stern-anchor of the "Odeon" with a chain of eight metres length attached still had to be recovered from the bottom. The shipping authority Regensburg and Deggendorf are still searching for the lost anchor gear, supported by the water police Deggendorf with sonar. Around 40-50 ships are waiting for passage. Among the sihps affected were also two river cruise ships, The "River Melody" is stuck in Vilshofen since Mar 25 and was meanwhile joined by the "Scenic Diamond". Its 162 Australian passengers were taken to Regensburg by bus, while the American passengers of the "River Melody" headed to Kelheim by bus too. Also some gravel which has been pushed up when the "Odeon" got stuck in the narrow waterway, poses an obstruction for navigation and was to be removed starting on Mar 27. Tue Mar 27 10:20:05 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "Odeon", 2801 ts (EU-No.: 02326629), and the pushed barge "Elly" (EU-Nr.: 02324429) were refloated on the Danube at river km 2281 on Mar 26 and taken downstream by he barge "Armaris" after a part of the cargo of iron ore was lightered. The grounding site, however, remained closed for shipping as the lost anchor gear still had to be traced and recovered as they posed a navigational hazard. The search for the anchors was continued after daybreak on Mar 27.
