Qatar Shipping buys large LNG carrier Milaha Ras Laffan

Qatar Shipping Company, part of Milaha, has acquired the remaining 60% interests in two LNG carriers for an undisclosed sum from French bank Société Générale. The Korean-built vessels Milaha Ras Laffan (138,273 cbm, built 2004) and Milaha Qatar (145,602 cbm, built 2006) are currently both on 25-year timecharters to RasGas, with 14 years and 16 years remaining on their respective contracts.

The "Mærsk Ras Laffan" rescued six Iranian sailors whose ship had sunk in the Gulf of Persia on Aug 12. 2010. At 8.27 a.m. an object was sighted in rough seas and short time later an SOS-flag sighted. The crew of the distressed vessel started to throw cargo over board in order to lighten the ship. The "Mærsk Ras Laffan" launched a boat and took the crew aboard.
