Container blown into Rhine

Thu Jan 05 10:38:28 CET 2012 Timsen

A pusher convoy consisting of the "Melanie" and "Melanie H." lost a container on Jan 4, 2012, at 11.30 p.m. on the Rhine at the Gernsheimer Bow, river.km 463,5. The ships were underway from Antwerp to Mannheim when severe wind gusts caused problems. Despite a proper stowage of containers several containers tipped over, and one empty container fell into the water. In addition, three containers in the cargo hold overturned or moved to one side. The crew stopped the ship. They secured the floating container with ropes alongside. While securing the container the ships got stuck on the Gernsheimer shore and damaged some trees. Also the ship's radar mast was damaged. The ship is currently in Gernsheim and will, when the storm has calmed down, salvage the container and secure the remaining cargo.
