Removal of shifted containers has started

Fri May 05 09:56:50 CEST 2017 Timsen

About 20 containers on the main deck of the "San Rafael" were affected by the collapse, at least eight were damaged or destroyed. The cause of the collapse was yet unknown, most probably it was a combination if faulty lashing with rough seas. The container ship had docked in Vigo on May 1, with shifted and collapsed containers stacks. In the afternoon of Apr 3 the removal of the detached boxes commenced with the assistance of a mobile crane in order to proceed with the rearrangement of the remainder of the cargo. The ship left Vigo on Apr 4 at 9 p.m. and berthed at the at the Leixoes Container Terminal South on Apr 5 at 8 a.m. Spanish reports with photos: http://www.farodevigo.es/gran-vigo/2017/05/04/buques-pasaje-acicalan-vigo/1672389.html# http://www.farodevigo.es/gran-vigo/2017/05/03/san-rafael-recoloca-hoy-contenedores/1671711.html https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C-vN3GzWAAE_sIC.jpg

Container collapsed on cargo deck

Tue May 02 19:19:00 CEST 2017 Timsen

On May 1, 2017, at 7.40 a.m. the "San Rafael" docked at the commercial wharf in Vigo with shifted and collapsed containers stacks hanging over the starboard side on the main deck. Some containers seemed to have been lost. The Maritime Rescue and Port authority indicated there was no serious damage. The cause of the cargo damage was not clear at present and could have been storm damage as well as faulty stowage. The ship had sailed from Lobito on Apr 2.
