Tug sank on Mississippi

Tue Dec 15 09:17:52 CET 2015 Timsen

On Dec 14, 2015, the two tugs "Margaret Ann" and "William E. Strait" MMSI:367535290 were in collision at mile marker 727 on the Lower Mississippi River south of the Interstate 55 bridge. The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot support boat to help marine investigators and inspectors working the crash. The vessels made plans to pass each other, but they incorrectly gauged the distance and ended up colliding at around 12:30 p.m. The "William E, Strait" sank in 20 feet of water. The U.S. Coast Guard hired divers to find out if there are any harmful chemicals that made it into the water. Oil Spill Response crews have also been called in to assist. They sent a 25-foot boat from the Sector Lower Mississippi River along with an HC-144 Ocean Sentry fixed-wing aircraft from Aviation Training Center Mobile. A safety zone has been established from mile markers 726 to 728. Report with photos and video: http://www.msnewsnow.com/story/30743819/tugboat-sinking-in-mississippi-river-after-crash
