Medevac off Torbay

Mon Dec 14 20:48:48 CET 2020 Timsen

A member of the 'Marella Explorer 2' which was moored off Torbay was medevaced on Dec 13, 2020, after suffering a suspected heart attack. The crew of the Torbay RNLI lifeboat went out just after midday. The victim was taken ashore to Torquay in one of the Marella’s own lifeboats, accompanied by RNLI Torbay’s all-weather boat. He was taken to Torbay Hospital for treatment.

49 British citizens repatriated from Mexico

Thu Apr 02 11:57:41 CEST 2020 Timsen

Mexico allowed 49 British citizens to disembark from the 'Marella Explorer 2' and fly home, and in exchange the cruise line paid for 141 Mexicans stuck in England by coronavirus travel restrictions to fly home. On March 31 the Mexican navy had removed a passenger in critical condition from the vessel for emergency treatment ashore. The ship was anchored off the Yucatan state port of Puerto Progreso. The passengers taken off the ship on April 1 were transported to the Yucatan capital of Merida and put on a chartered flight to London. Health precautions were taken. The Mexican and British governments coordinated both operations with the cruise ship operator, Marella Cruises, part of British company TUI Travel. It was unclear how many were still aboard.

Passenger with flu symptoms medevaced off Yucatan

Wed Apr 01 12:31:11 CEST 2020 Timsen

An elderly British passenger with flu symptoms was transferred from the 'Marella Explorer 2' to a Yucatan hospital on March 30, 2020. She approached Progreso’s shore without docking, appeasing authorities who did not want the stranded ship risking the local population. Four crew members reportedly were tested positive for coronavirus when it was touring the Caribbean. The ship made its way to Yucatan at the request of Mexico and the British Embassy in Mexico for humanitarian reasons. While it was originally to dock at the port, a compromise was reached when the ship was kept 10 kilometers offshore, where the critically ill patient, 71, was transferred by a Navy boat. It was not known if the passenger had been tested for COVID-19. No other passenger was allowed off the ship.
