Single hand sailor rescued by AMVER ship
A single hand sailor was rescued 400 miles south east of Long Island by the 'Mare Picenum' on June 16, 2021. The 81-year-old sailor was aboard his disabled 36-foot sailing vessel 'Katharina' approximately 400 miles Southeast of Long Island, New York. The Coast Guard 1st District Command Center received a report on June 15 at approximately 4:52 a.m. that the 36-foot German-flagged sailing vessel 'Katharina' was disabled due to a broken mast. A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew immediately launched to assist. Once the HC-144 crew was on scene, they established communication with the Katharina, and queried all automated mutual-assistance vessel rescue (AMVER) vessels within the area. Upon making contact with multiple AMVER vessels, the crew of the 'Mare Picenum', less than 25 miles away, accepted the request and diverted to assist. The crew received notification at approximately 9:30 a.m. and safely rescued the sailor at 12:54 p.m. He reported no medical concerns or injuries and was the only person aboard the yacht. Weather on scene was reported as 35 mph winds with a swell of five foot height.
