Assistance by another Maersk ship

Maersk has confirmed there was an incident aboard the 'Maersk Sana' in the Atlantic on April 28, that injured three crew members and has left the ship drifting while teams worked to identify operational contingencies. One crew member was in critical but stable condition in a hospital in Bermuda, while two others were treated for their injuries. The 'Maersk Sana' had departed Newark, New Jersey on April 26, bound for Singapore, and machinery related issues in the main engine room, leaving it adrift approximately 354 nautical miles east of Bermuda. Maersk reported that another of its vessels, the 'Maersk Nomazwe', which had departed Algeciras on April 22, diverted to assist the ship. One crew member from the 'Maersk Sana' received First Aid onboard the ship while the others were first moved to the 'Maersk Nomazwe', and on April 30 were evacuated to Bermuda. One was them was treated and discharged while the other crew member remained in the hospital. The 'Maersk Nomazwe' has resumed its voyage to Newark, where it is due to arrive on May 3.

Container ship disabled following engine room explosion

On April 28, 2025, the 'Maersk Sana' was disabled and adrift in the Sargossa Sea in pos. 31°52.50' N 057°48.55' W after an engine explosion. Two crew members were severely burned. Vessels in the area were asked to keep a sharp lookout and assist if possible.

Deadly snake found on ship at New Jersey port

Snake experts from the Bronx Zoo have rescued a poisonous Indian cobra that stowed away on a container ship headed to New Jersey's Port Elizabeth. The cobra, which is a protected species, was taken to the zoo where it is being treated by veterinarians. Anxious crew members on board the Maersk Sana called federal officials and wildlife authorities, and the Bronx Zoo's Kevin Torregosa, a herpetologist, a zoologist that studies reptiles and amphibians, responded with his partner. "When we located the snake deep below the deck of the container ship, it was in very poor condition". Torregosa says the snake was a bit dehydrated and weak. After climbing down eight stories into the hold of the ship, the two found the snake after about 30 minutes. It's estimated to be about one year old. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service contacted the The Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo on Monday to help remove the cobra from the ship when it reached its New Jersey destination.
