Alga enroute to grounded tanker at Freeport

Wed Oct 02 10:34:51 CEST 2013 Timsen

The "Alga" was sent from New York in order to to lighter the cargo from the grounded "Formosa Falcon" off Freeport. The tanker was scheduled to arrive in Grand Bahama on Oct 4, 2013. It was anticipated that approximately 6000-8000 metric tons of the cargo would have to be transferred. The National Oil Spill Advisory Committee convened a special meeting on Oct 1 to discuss the issues relative to the grounded vessel including contingencies for the lightering and refloating operations. The National Oil Spill Committee was expected at Freeport on Oct 4 to assist the Local Oil Spill Committee in monitoring the entire operation, and to ensure that safety mechanisms are in place to safeguard the marine environment. The team was to remain in Freeport for the duration of the lightering and refloating operations.
