Two fishing vessels sank in Ribeira

Thu Jan 23 11:40:55 CET 2020 Timsen

After the sinking of the 10-m-f/v 'Nécora' in the evening of JJan 20, 2020, in Ribeira, the morning of Jan 22 the ‘L'Etel’, 263 gt (IMO: 6807412) capsized at 6.30 a.m. at its long time berth after becoming unstable due to stormy winds and ensuing water ingress. The ship had been berthed in the river basin for years, waiting for the demolition. It had caught fire in 2012 and has been in Santa Uxía de Ribeira since then. A local resident raised the alarm when the ship developed a list. A little later, only a part of the ship's bottom protruded from the water. Port personnel ruled out a danger to the environment as there was no oil left in the tanks of the ship, which had been unemployed for around 10 years. Smaller diesel oil stains, however, drifted on the water. Cleaning measures have been initiated. Boats of Salvamento Marítimo and Gardacostas collected floating lines in the water so that they did not endanger other ships. The owner was informed to initiate clearance of the wreck. The 10 meter long cutter 'Nécora' had also sunk completely after a long period of neglect in stormy winds in Santa Uxía. But it was already lifted by the crane ship ‘Hercules’ on Jan 22. Divers went into the water at 10 a.m. and attached lifting straps. An hour later the wreck appeared on the water surface. It was pumped out and then placed in a safe area. The ship, which has been idle for three years, was now likely to be scrapped. The salvage was arranged by the Portos de Galicia.
