Cargo ship adrift in Agean Sea

Fri Jan 03 12:31:42 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Lady Sham', with 14 crew members aboard, being enroute from Bejaia to Tripoli with an ETA as of Jan 3, 2020, suffered an engine failure in the evening of Jan 1 and went adrift in the Aegean Sea between Rhodes and the Karpasos islands. On Jan 3, the ship was still drifting in western direction towards Karpathos being monitored by the Greek Coastguard. 11 miles southwest of Rhodes the ship was taken in tow by the Greek tug 'Christos XXVII' (IMO: 7729710) off Carnagio and safely anchored off Rhodes in the morning of Jan 4. No marine pollution was caused by the incident. The Central Port Authority of Rhodes banned the vessel from sailing until the damage was repaired and a class certificate was issued by the relevant classification societies. The tug 'Christos XXXIV' was appointed to tow the vessel to Piaeus for repairs. Upon completion of towage approval formalities, the towage commenced in the morning of Jan 15 with an ETA as of Jan 17.
