Near miss of two ferries

Thu Jun 13 12:54:18 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Bahama Mama" and the tourist boat "Kontiki II" from Aquabus were on the verge of crashing on June 12, 2019, at 12.38 p.m. between Ibiza and Formentera. The larger ship was going faster and, having more difficulty maneuvering, sent numerous warnings to the "Kontiki II" to change the course. The ships had a very similar course, although the Baleària ferry doubled in speed the "Kontiki II". Seeing that it did not respond to radio and horn warnings, the captain had to stop machines to avoid the collision. The captain of the small boat did not react in time, and one of his passengers ended up jumping into the sea in panic. He was rescued safe and sound. The Maritime Captaincy has opened an investigation and questioned those responsible for the two ships to clarify what happened and purge responsibilities. Aquabus has already taken action on the matter and dismissed the captain of the "Kontiki II" for misbehaviour. The "Bahama Mama" contacted again with the boat of Aquabus to know if they needed any aid. The captain replied that the situation was under control. The "Bahama Mama" entered the port of Denia at 4.15 p.m. The "Kontiki II" returned to Ibiza.
