Ferry caught fire after explosion

On Aug 11, 2024, the 'Kirana 1' caught fire in the waters north of Semarang, Central Java, around Tanjung Emas Port at around 4:15 p.m. WIB. The position of the ship was around three nautical miles from the port pier in pos. 110°24'564" E 6°55''067" S. At the time of the fire, there were no passengers on board the ship. However, there were several crew members as the ship was currently being repaired. There were 52 crew members on the ship. They consisted of 21 core crew, 24 vendor crew, and seven technicians. All were evacuated safely by a number of ships, namely the 'Ditpolairud Polda Jateng', the tugs 'Nusantara VIII', 'Krisna 315', and 'Satria Laksana 127' ."The incident began when the ship's crew heard an explosion from the middle deck and saw the fire spreading. Although extinguishing efforts had been made, the fire could not be controlled, forcing them to abandon the ship by jumping into the sea. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Further investigation will be carried out immediately when the fire can be extinguished. On the night, Ditpolairud officers were still around the position to assist in extinguishing efforts. In addition, they also were monitoring and maintaining security in the waters where the fire occurred. Strong winds were an obstacle in extinguishing effort. The KM 'Kirana 1' had arrived at Tanjung Emas Port on the nght of Aug 10, carrying passengers from Sampit Port, Central Kalimantan. "The ship docked at Tanjung Emas to disembark the passengers.
