Fire on tanker in Halifax

Mon Jan 28 09:45:55 CET 2019 Timsen

Halifax-area firefighters were called on Jan 27, 2019, around 7 a.m. after a fire broke out aboard the "Kivalluq W. which was berthed at the Imperial Oil Wharves in Halifax. The fire in a generator compartment was first fought by the ship's crew, but when they were unable to bring the flames under control, the Halifax fire was dispatched who then requested dockyard fire of the Department of National Defence to assist, as they were specialists in ship board firefighting. The firefighters were able to extinguish the fire after two hours, clearing after 8 a.m. The Imperial Oil previously had its own fire department on site, but that disbanded when the refinery was shut down, and the refineries two engines were sold at auction. The tanker, operated by Coastal Shipping, which is part of Newfoundland’s Woodward Group, was scheduled to move to pier 9 overnight, presumably to effect repairs. However that move has been cancelled.
