Survivors of collision with "Nikkei Maru" arrived at Senda-Shiogama port

Mon Oct 01 11:38:28 CEST 2012 Timsen

Surviving crew members of the "Horiei Maru" which sank early on Sep 24 in the Pacific Ocean after colliding with the "Nikkei Tiger", arrived at Sendai-Shiogama Port on Sep 29 morning. The 119-ton boat from the Mie Prefecture sank 900 kilometers off Miyagi Prefecture. The 2nd Regional Japan Coast Guard Headquarters in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, interviewed the four Indonesian and five Japanese survivors of the 22-person crew about the circumstances surrounding the accident. The JCG will also question the crew of the "Nikkei Tiger" about the incident. The ship wa scheduled to arrive in the prefecture's Ishinomaki Bay on Sep 30. Search and rescue operations for the 13 missing Horiei Maru members were scheduled to resume as soon as weather conditions improved. The survivors arrived at Sendai Shiogama Port aboard the "Koei Maru", the fishing boat that rescued them, at around 5 a.m. on Sep 29. With a typhoon approaching, the "Koei Maru" suspended its search for survivors and returned to port, where the nine survivors were reunited with their families. The "Horiei Maru" and the "Koei Maru" were sailing together to avoid a low pressure system when the "Koei Maru" told the "Horiei Maru" over the radio that it would change course. The sea around the accident site was stormy due to the approach of Typhoon No. 18. Weather conditions forced the JCG to suspend its search, although it has continued to look for survivors by air. Seven crew members were on the ship's first deck when the vessels collided. Eleven were in cabins under the bridge, and three were on watch duty. The entire crew except for those on watch were sleeping. The JCG believed the rescued crew members were the four from the first deck, three who were in cabins under the bridge, and one of those on watch.
