Guard Ship in distress off Vlieland

Tue Aug 19 09:34:59 CEST 2014 Timsen

On Aug 19, 2014, the Coastguard Center Den Helder was alerted after the "Kestrel - WY 211" suffered water ingress 50 miles north of Vlieland at 7.30 a.m. The lifeboats of the KNRM-stations Vlieland, the "Graaf van Bylandt", and the "Arie Visser" Terschelling as well as a helicopter of the Coastguard and the tug "Ievoli Amaranth" were dispatched to assist the guard vessel and its crew of three. Waves on scene were 3,5 meters. Also the tug "Hunter" was nearby but was towing another vessel. However, it could provide additional pumps if needed. The salvage vessel "Hurricane" was underway too. At 08:15 a.m. the helicopter was on scene and delivered a pump of the "Hunter" as the casualtie's own pump was not working. Also a fixed wing aircraft of the Coastguard reached the site. After the tug "Ievoli Amaranth" which served as On Scene Coördinator also provided additional pumps at 9.20 a.m., the situation was under control for the moment. The aircrafts left the scene. The "Kestrel" was limping towards Stortemelk, escorted by the other craft. The water level could be lowered for 40 centiemters until 10 a.m., the "Ievoli Amaranth" and the lifeboats continued the escort util the traffic separation zone was passed. Two salvors of Noordgat joined the crew of the "Kestrel". The "Ievoli Amaranth" was to remain with the ship until it has reached the Schulpengat at around 4 p.m., and the "Hurricane" would be escorting the vessel into Oudeschild, ETA 6 p.m. Dutch report and photos: http://www.knrm.nl/service/reddingrapporten/guard-vessel-op-de-noordzee-maakt-water-64a4afb5b2 https://twitter.com/Kustwacht_NL/status/501708234286456832/photo/1
