Grounding on Outer Banks
On Nov 28, 2021, the 'Jonathan Ryan' ran aground at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks. National Park Service staff was monitoring the vessel, just weeks after Cape Hatteras National Seashore removed the haunting wreck of the 'Ocean Pursuit' that had become a tourist attraction. The 'Jonathan Ryan' became lodged in the sand about 1,25 miles southeast of the Frisco Campground. The Seashore was working with the U.S. Coast Guard and the vessel’s captain to determine next steps for removing the trawler. In the afternoon of Nov. 29 the ship could be freed from its position 50 feet off the beach.
