Scientists Examine Peculiar Underwater Mountain

Tue Mar 27 20:02:07 CEST 2012 arnekiel

Scientists have recently finalized an expedition in an effort to learn more about an undersea mountain they say may have formed in a very different way than the rest of the seafloor. Aboard the JOIDES Resolution (Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling) research ship, these scientists studied the formations and makeup of Atlantis Massif. This undersea mountain has been found to be made up of rocks typically found much deeper in the oceans crust. Other volcanic seamounts are usually made up of a black rock called basalt, which is typical of the majority of the seafloor. Source: redOrbit (http://s.tt/18j7B)

JOIDES RESOLUTION 7423081

Wed Apr 21 01:46:32 CEST 2010 FernShade

“JOIDES” stands for Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling - the science of exploring what lies beneath the ocean floor... “Resolution” honors the HMS Resolution, commanded more than 200 years ago by Capt. James Cook, who explored the Pacific and Antarctic regions. Data from the JR's ocean drilling offers a means of understanding climate & environmental change throughout a significant part of our planet’s history—Earth's paleoclimate -- like the extinction of the dinosaurs. Work aboard the research vessel never ceases; operations continue 24 hours a day. JOIDES Resolution’s complement can consist of 50 scientists and technicians and 65 crew members. The crew consists of marine professionals and ocean drilling specialists, among others. The JR’s science party is specific to each mission, with skills and science disciplines chosen especially to best achieve the mission’s goals.
