Freighter hit pier and sherrif's vessel

Thu Oct 04 18:36:17 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "John D. Leitch" struck a pier and a Lorain County Sheriff’s Office vessel while traveling the Black River in the evening of Oct 3, 2012. Following the incident, the "John D. Leitch" was docked at the old Pellet Terminal Dock. The U.S. Coast Guard responded. They asked Lorain police officer to administer breathalyzer tests to the captain and crew members. Each crew member and the captain had negative results for the presence of alcohol. There were no reports of injuries. There was no one on the sheriff’s vessel docked at the pier during the crash. The freighter was assessed and released to continue on its journey. There didn’t appear to be damage that would affect its seaworthiness but it will be examined again. The sheriff’s vessel was taken out of the water and assessed for damage. The cause of the accident is under investigation. JOHN D LEITCH 6714586

Tue Oct 26 09:36:03 CEST 2010 Timsen

At about 6:30 a.m. on Oct 25, 2010, the "John D. Leitch" became lodged in mud and shoaling at the Buffalo Harbor's outer north entrance. Officials from the Buffalo Coast Guard Station, which is situated beside the entrance, investigated the incident and determined no leaks of cargo or fuel occurred, averting environmental concerns. The Great Lakes Towing tugs "Washington" and "New Jersey" pulled the vessel back out into Lake Erie at about 12:35 p.m. In the evening she was unloading behind the BBC Greenland at Gateway Metroport. The vessel wasloaded with 28,000 tons of road salt from Goderich, Ontario. odin.tc
