Pilot fell into the water

Sat Mar 10 14:10:37 CET 2012 Timsen

The Bar Pilot Capt. Deb Dempsey fell into the Pacific Ocean early on Mar 5, 2012. She fell while transfering from the "Navios Ionian" to the bar pilot vessel "Chinook". The pilot crew performed well-practiced rescue maneuvers and had Dempsey out of the water within several minutes. They also contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, which dispatched two motor lifeboat crews from Station Cape Disappointment. Guardsmen received a call from the Chinook at 1:50 a.m., stating Dempsey had activated her smoke signal and a strobe light. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a third call from the Chinook at 2:02 a.m., stating the crew had successfully recovered the bar pilot. Air Station Astoria had prepared an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to aid in the rescue, although Dempsey was recovered before it ever had to take off. Two 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Station Cape Disappointment arrived on scene and escorted the "Chinook" across the bar and into Hammond, where Dempsey was placed in the care of local EMS technicians.
