Ferry grounded off Hiddensee

Thu Jun 19 09:38:01 CEST 2025 Timsen

The "Insel Hiddensee, with 138 passengers on board, ran aground on tate afternoon of June 18, 2024. between Rügen and Hiddensee due to a technical defect in the steering system. A faulty relay in the steering system had caused the ship to deviate from its course in the narrow fairway, and it got stuck in the mud. Initially, the rescue boat "Nausikaa," of the DGzRS station on Hiddensee, attempted to tow the ferry off, but attempt was unsuccessful. Only with the assistance of the more powerful rescue boat "Nis Randers" it was possible to tow the vessel back into the fairway after about one hour. As a precautionary measure, all relays in the control system of the "Insel Hiddensee" were replaced after the incident. After a successful ttrial, the ferry resumed its regular service. Grounding off Hiddensee

Fri Jul 01 10:29:47 CEST 2016 Timsen

In the afternoon of June 30, 2016, the "Insel Hiddenssee" ran aground east of Hiddensee with 329 passengers on board. The sea was calm and there was no immediate danger. As the ship was unable to refloat with own means, the captain alerted the lifeboat "Nausikaa" of the DGzRS station Vitte at 4.15 p.m. Some minutes later the lifeboat headed to the ship which was stuck 2,7 miles from the station. First on scene was the f/v "Alma" which in vain tried to pull the "Insel Hiddensee" off. Only when the "Nausikaa" also had connected a towing wire, the ships were jointly able to pull the passenger ship to deeper water from where it was able to proceed to Schaprode upon Rügen island. The water police Sassnitz launched an Investigation. No damage was reported.
