Mon Aug 05 10:54:52 CEST 2024 Timsen

An engine room explosion aboard the ‘Icon Amara’, which was sailing 23 nautical miles from the coast of Samalaju in Bintulu, Serawak, killed two people, the oiler George Ngilah, 24, from Sibu, and the assistant engineer Mumamad Firdaus Abdull Fatah, 35, in Samalaju waters, Bintu, Sarawak, on Aug 2,2 2024, at 10.40 p.m. when the ship was heading to the Patricia platform. Another crew member was seriously injured. Two more victims were transferred onto the JM ‘Purmama’ for initial treatment. The main door of the engine room was ripped out. Three ambulances rushed to the Bintulu port jetty, to where the ship was towed after the incident. Five ambulances from the Bintulu hospital as well as the fire brigade were also deployed to assist. The injured seafarer was taken to the Nyabau hospital. The remains of the engineer arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Airport, Sepang, on Aug 5 at around 4 a.m., and then taken to Kampung Parit, where he was buried at the Jay Muslum Cemetery in Matang Jelutong.
