Steinweg met all safety requirements - investigations going on

Fri Sep 26 10:35:10 CEST 2025 Timsen

The Rotterdam-based transshipment company C. Steinweg Group meets all safety requirements set by authorities. The port authority stated this in a statement on Sep 25, following the fatal accident aboard the 'Hiamgyam Spiriti' on Sep 22. The ship remained stationary as of Sep 26. The company also emphasized that the measures were being monitored very regularly. Rotterdam's port alderman, Simons, however, was concerned and wanted to speak with Steinweg. This summer, he already had a profound conversation after the previous fatal accident, he told the city council on Sep 25. After eight accidents, this company is facing a lot of trouble.. In June, two employees of the company who were unloading steel plates have died. Criminal investigations were underway into both incidents by the Public Prosecution Service. The Steinweg company was awaiting the outcome of the investigations and was currently assessing whether safety improvements could be made. The company emphasized its full cooperation with the investigation, getting to the bottom of this. Other fatal accidents at Steinweg locations in recent years were: 2017 – Hartel Terminal A 17-year-old apprentice died when a forklift overturned. 2018 – Various locations Three deaths in a short period of time in separate incidents. 2018 – Marcor An employee died after an accident with a grabber at the Marcor transshipment company. June 19, 2025 – Waalhaven (Pier 6) Two dead and two seriously injured while unloading steel plates. September 22, 2025 – Botlek Terminal (Terminal C) A man died in the hold of a ship. In addition, there were several reports of serious injuries, but the exact number was not public.

Deadly accident during unloading operations

Wed Sep 24 10:24:19 CEST 2025 Timsen

A 21 year old man from Capelle aan den IJssel has died on the 'Huangyan Spirit' at the Botlek Terminal in Rotterdam on Sep 22, 2025, at 8.30 a.m., while the ship was unloading aluminum blocks at the facility of the C. Steinweg Group at the Professor Gerbrandy Way. The victim was found in the cargo hold, at a depth of 15 meters. He had been working there with colleagues. The employee was buried under a load of aluminum blocks. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but their efforts to save his life were unsuccessful. An investigation has been launched. In June, two people also died in the hold of a ship while unloading steel plates. Two others were seriously injured. One of the fatalities was also a young employee. In 2018, a student from the STC (Shipping and Handling Centre) died the Steinweg terminal in Europoort. Following the accident in June, the FNV Havens (Dutch Ports Federation) called on the Labour Inspectorate to intervene at the transshipment company. According to the union, there have been seven fatalities at Steinweg since 2017. With the latest accident, that number now has risen to eight. The 'Huangyan Spirit' remained stationary in Rotterdam as of Sep 24.
