Fire in petcoke cargo

Sat Nov 12 14:43:37 CET 2016 Timsen

On Nov 11, 2016, a fire was on aboard the "Top Trader", which was being docked at Jose Terminal, Puerto La Cruz, since OCt 28, 2016, loading petcoke. The bulk carrier was receiving the load from the state-run PDVSA when burning petroleum coke was noticed in three of its cargo holds. The crew tried to extinguish the fire with water, but the problem could not be solved. An inspection might be requested to know if the burning load affected the vessel's structure. The fire was on since at least beginning of the week and halted Venezuela’s petcoke export. The "Top Trader" had loaded some 22,000 tonnes of coke, from a planned load of 49,000 tonnes. It has Europe as destination, but the captain has not yet received authorization from the insurance company and the broker to move it if the load is burning.
