Two medevacs off Kodiak

Thu Feb 11 09:40:30 CET 2016 Timsen

On Feb 8, 2016, the Coast Guard 17th District watchstanders received a report from the "Cemtex Venture" that two crewmembers suffered injuries as a result of falls during heavy weather. Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon who recommended that the crewmembers be taken to a higher level of medical care. Watchstanders requested that the ship alter its course toward Kodiak Island to get within range of the Coast Guard helicopters. In the afternoon, a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and HC-130 airplane crew launched from Kodiak to rendezvous with the ship and medevac the crewmembers. The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew safely hoisted the injured, a 32-year-old man and a 28-year-old man approximately 220 miles southeast of Kodiak and rendezvoused with emergency medical services personnel in Kodiak where one patient was transferred by LifeMed to Anchorage and the other to Kodiak Providence Hospital. Weather on scene was reported as 18 mph winds and 19-foot seas. Report with photo and video: http://www.uscgnews.com/go/doc/4007/2785302/
