Captain and crew awarded for rescue operation in Atlantic

Sat Oct 28 20:45:03 CEST 2023 Timsen

On Oct 25, 2023, the Dutch Minister Mark Harbers presented a De Ruytermedal to the wife of Yevhenii Feschenko, the captain of the 'Hanze Göteborg'. The award goes to the captain of the ship of the Groningen shipping company Hanzevast Shipping, because he and his crew rescued four American people in the Atlantic Ocean at the end of December 2022. The four American former soldiers got into trouble during a rowing competition in which they had to row across the Atlantic Ocean. The boat became rudderless and was adrift for 22 hours before the 'Hanza Göteborg' found them in the dark amid rough seas. The rescue should not have taken much longer, because the raft sank almost immediately after the last person on board had been taken off board. Already in September the Philippine Ministry of Transport awarded them an award for outstanding courage for the rescue operation, as part of the National Maritime Week in the Philippines.

Rescued rowers dropped off in Contrecoeur

Tue Jan 10 21:42:16 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Hanze Göteborg', which rescued the four American rowers of the 'Moody' from the Atlantic Ocean on Dec 28, has arrived in Contrcoeur, Quebec, on Jan 10, 2023. They were welcomed by Peter Dekker, director of the Hanzevast Shipping, who flew from Groningen to Quebec to welcome the sixteen-member crew and the castaways. Originally, the ship was supposed to dock on Jan 8 in the town of Contrecoeur, but ice formation made the Saint Lawrence River difficult to navigate. Oce ashore, the Americans were taken to a nearby hotel, where they were reunited with their wives and children. They had been participating in a rowing race when their rowing boat capsized due to bad weather. They took refuge in a small raft, which they had on board just in case. They then drifted for 22 hours, and were rescued thanks to the attentive and awake crew of the Groningen freighter. Freighter rescued crew of capsized rowboat Moody

Thu Jan 05 10:33:31 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Hanze Göteborg' has rescued four Americans who took part in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge aboard the 'Moody', a rowing race over 3,000 nautical miles. They had departed from La Gomera on Dec 12, 2022. In the early morning of Dec28, their rowboat capsized. Failing to refloat the boat, the crew was forced to deploy the life raft. The weather was very bad, with a strong wind, high waves and a swell of at least four meters height. The Mayday call was picked up by the freighter which launched an SAR operation 10 nautical miles from the position. Despite a poor connection, the freighter managed to make contact with the 'Moody' crew. After more than two hours of searching in the meanwhile night, the crew of the 'Hanze Göteborg' got the life raft in sight. The ship managed to maneuver next to the raft, the castaways could be taken on board after 22 hours. On board the 'Hanze Göteborg', they underwent a medical examination and received warm clothing and food. The castaways will remain on board until the has reached the port of Contrecoeur on Jan 7, 2023. The ship had left Mozambique on Dec 5 with 25,000 tons of sand on board.
