Container ship detained in Genoa

Thu Aug 28 12:16:58 CEST 2025 Timsen

The Italian Coast Guard has detainedthe 'Hansa Horneburg' n Genoa, en route from Miami via Vado Ligure, for not being fully compliant with the requirements for limiting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, after its arrival in port on Aug 21, 2025, following a safety inspection carried out on board the vessel by personnel from the Port State Control Inspection Unit. Despite possessing valid certifications issued by the flag state confirming compliance with international MARPOL conventions, the ship was found to be non-compliant with regulations limiting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. It was found that several components of the onboard electric generators lacked the identification elements of conformity required by legislation and the NOx Technical Code for the prevention of air pollution. As a result, it could not be ensured that the ship was operating within the parameters needed to keep NOx emissions within regulatory limits. The inspection covered all operational areas of the vessel and also included an emergency drill to assess crew preparedness. The ship would only be permitted to depart once all deficiencies have been rectified under the supervision of the flag administration and classification society and after passing a final inspection by the Port State Control team. The 'Hansa Horneburg' remained stationary as of Aug 28.
