Battery ferry forced to sail with diesel after failure
The 'Hallaig', which had suffered a battery failure and was taken out of service in Raasay on Sep 7, 2023, has been forced to run exclusively on diesel fuel for some time and will continue to do so well into the year 2025. Officials expected repairs to the battery to be completed no earlier than April 2025, at a cost of 1,5 million Euros.
Battery overheated on ferry
The 'Hallaig', sailing between Skye and Raasay, was taken out of service at Raasay after a battery overheated on Sep 7, 2023. The Scottish Fire and Rescue attended and were currently monitoring the battery system. As a precaution, the system continued to be monitored for the next hour before entry was made into the battery locker to allow further assessment. The operator CalMac diverted another ferry, the 'Loch Tarbert', as a relief vessel and chartered a rigid inflatable as a temporary relief vessel for the Raasay route. That service was to continue until the 'Loch Tarbert' has arrived, but access to the shore was only via a ladder, which was suitable for passengers with mobility issues.
