More than 100 migrants rescued off Gran Canaria, one deceased, one medevac
The 'Guardamar Polimnia' hat rescued more than 100 migrants from distress south of Gran Canaria on Aug 3, 2025. One person died, another was in critical condition and flown to Gran Canaria by helicopter. The French research vessel 'Beautemps-Beaupré' (IMO: 9098361) had initially sighted the overcrowded boat at 6:50 p.m. approximately 185 kilometers off the Moroccan coast near Dakhla. The 'Guardamar Polimnia' was subsequently alerted and reached the area after about 11 hours. Rescue operation south of Gran Canaria. The French naval ship remained nearby at the request of Salvamento Marítimo, until the SAR vessel arrived on scene. The crew of the 'Guardamar Polimnia' took the migrants on board and set course for the port of Arguineguín, Gran Canaria. The seriously injured person was flown to Gran Canaria Airport by the SAR helicopter Helimer 202 and dropped off at 3:55 p.m., An ambulance transported the patient further to a hospital. The rescued migrants arrived at the port of Arguineguín at 8:40 p.m.
44 migrants assisted to Arrecife
Salvamento Marítimo rescued 44 people aboard a small boat, which was sailing approximately 50 nautical miles off Lanzarote, on June 1. At around 7:00 a.m., the MRCC in Las Palmas received a phone call with a position at sea, with no other information. Later, another call indicated that it was a small boat, close to a ship. The 'Guardamar Polimnia' was moblilized, which shortly afterward received confirmation of the sighting of the small boat, 50 miles off Lanzarote, from the m/v 'Hyperion Ray,' which escorted it until the lifeboat arrived. Minutes before 11 a.m. its crew spotted the boat and proceeded minutes later to rescue the 44 people on board, all of them of sub-Saharan African origin and in apparent good health. The vessel arrived in Arrecife, at around 1:30 p.m.
88 migrants rescued off Lanzarote
On the afternoon of May 8, 2025, the 'Guardamar Polimnia' rescued 88 people of sub-Saharan origin from two inflatable boats, one of which was located 41 nautical miles northeast of Lanzarote and the second one 27 miles east of Lanzarote. One boat was located northeast of Arrecife, after an emergency call reached the authorities at 4:56 p.m. The boat was located approximately 104 kilometers northeast of Arrecife. The RCC responded quickly and dispatched the 'Guardamar Polimnia'. The crew was able to safely board the 54 shipwrecked people, among them 10 unaccompanied minors, at 9:51 p.m. The rescue ship finally reached the port of Arrecife at 1:05 a.m. The Centro Coordinador de Emergencias y Seguridad (CECOES) reported that not all of the rescued people were in good health: One person had to be taken to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital for further examination.
