Marjanic recovered one man lost over board from fellow trawler

Fri Dec 19 10:39:28 CET 2014 Timsen

45 nautical miles west of the island of Oléron the "Marjanic" raised alert at the CROSS Etel on Dec 18 around 3:45 a.m. after two crew members of the trawler "La Nioulargue" from Oléron fell into the sea. Seven ships immediately headed to the area, and after 25 minutes one of the two victims was pulled aboard the "Médéluc". 50 minutes after the alert, the second man was found by the "Marjanic". When he was retrieved he was unconscious. At 4.45 a.m. after a conference call between the center of maritime medical consultation Toulouse, the Cross Etel, and the owner of "Marjanic" a helicopter evacuation of the man was decided. A Dauphin helicopter of the Navy base in La Rochelle took off at 5 a.m. with a team of the emergency room in La Rochelle on board. 27 minutes later, a diver and a physician were hoisted on board, on the deck of the "Marjanic" which was a delicate maneuver performed in 30 to 40 km/h winds. Despite their efforts, they could not save the life of the man. On Dec 18 at 11 a.m. the body was taken to the port of Cotinière. Regarding the cause of the accident, it may have been a hydraulic problem which forced a move to bring the trawl aboard. When the rope swept the deck, the two sailors were thrown overboard.
