Trawler hard aground off County Cork

Fri Jun 02 22:27:32 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Grand Saint Bernard' with 14 people on board ran aground off off Dursey Island at the coast of west Cork in the afternoon of June 2, 2023. The Valentia Coast Guard was notified at 2.30 p.m. and deployed the Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115, the ALB vor the RNLI Castletownbere and the Castletownbere Coast Guard unit. Weather conditions at the time were good with light winds and moderate swell. The lifeboat crew observed that the vessel was hard aground, listing and rocking back and forth. The vessel’s crew were on the deck and all wearing lifejackets. Because of the angle at which the vessel was perched and the fact that it was rocking from side to side, the decision was made to take most of the fishermen off. 10 of the vessel’s crew were airlifted. Pushed by the lifeboat, the vessel was subsequently refloated. The lifeboat crew was assisted by the crew of a local fishing boat that was in the area at the time. The trawler was then towed to Casteltownbere by a tug. Report with video: https://rnli.org/news-and-media/2023/june/02/castletownbere-rnli-involved-in-rescue-of-14-people-after-trawler-runs-aground
