Serious complaints - ship detained - ITF helping

On Dec 6, 2011, at 2 p.m. the "Freyfaxi" was detained in Kalamar following its grounding off Grimskär as several defiencies were found during the follow-up-inspection. The sailors were found to have not received their wages properly, and there was not enough food on board. The life-saving equipment had flaws. Documentation was missing. The circumstances of the grounding remained unclear. It was unclear who was on watch and which equipment was used. The ship had travelled on the wrong side of the lighthouse, and the master was under the suspicion of negligence and possibly had fallen asleep on the bridge. Alcohol samples were obtained. A ship inspector of the Transport Agency Maritime Department in Malmö was called to Kalmar and found there were a number of very serious complaints against the ship regarding a lack of maintenance, lack of documentation, lack of life saving equipment and more. The routines on the bridge did not work either. The International Transport Workers' Federation attended on Dec 5 and an Ombudsman from Gothenburg on Dec 6 trying to sort out the situation of the six crew members from Russia and Poland. The ship was supplied with food on Dec 6. According to the Norwegian shipping company financial problems caused the difficulty in paying wages. The CSO insurance companies have taken care of the urgent repair work which are to be carried out by divers next week. After the the grounding the master attempted first backing off its own power. When this failed, he requested assistance. After the ship was pulled to port, divers found holes in the hull, and water had entered the engine room. However, there was no serious risk of major oil leaks. The ship was on its way to Oskarshamn for loading stones. It is just over a year ago that the "Freyfaxi ran aground in Ulvesundet near Bergen. Freyfaxi aground off Kalmar

Coming from Wismar, the "Freyfaxi" ran aground in the early morning of Dec 4, 2011, off Kalmar. Divers of the Rescue Service checked the bottom of the ship after the grounding which occurred around 5 a.m. at the Skans Ground south of the Öland Bridge, after the ship had got on the wrong side of the lighthouse. The ship was assisted by personnel from the Port of Kalmar to get off the shoal and then towed to a wharf. The hull was found to have suffered several dents. Also a small crack was detected, but the water ingress could be controlled by the ship's pumps. The crew was drug tested with negative results. No pollution reported.
