Barge refloated taking advantage of swell
The 'Fairplay' could finally be refloated on the afternoon of June 15. The captain took advantage of the fact that the river's water level had risen again after heavy rain falls on June 15.. Another cargo shi, the "Vaiana" (MMSI: 205393890), proceeded from the West Port in Regensburg. It initially attempted to create waves by passing in order to free the "Fairplay." When that failed, the "Vaiana" stopped, attached ropes, and finally pulled the "Fairplay" free. The operation took several minutes. The 'Fairplay' then entered the West Port of Regensburg with own power on June 17 at 10.30 a.m, where a part of the cargo of iron ore will be unloaded. The bottom of the Danube was being investigated at the scene of the incident. Therefore, ships could not pass each other in the affected area for the time being. Rain falls did not help in recovery
The "Fairplay" remains stranded on the Danube near Regensburg. The expected rainfall on June 15 did not advance the salvage.. Contrary to the authorities' hopes, too little rain fell for rising water levels to give the stuck ship momentum. Salvage measures were being discussed and decided upon on June 16. he water level at the grounding site is currently 2.92 meters and will rise to about three meters, which corresponds to the water level at the time of the accident. Opening the Regensburg weir – just above the Danube – would not be helpful, because the water would rise a maximum of five to ten centimeters and spread throughout the entire Danube and its ports. A widespread rainfall all the way to the Bavarian Forest for the water level to have an impact would be needed. The company that owns the cargo ship has appointed an accident commissioner. He is to assess and quantify possible damage. He is also in contact with the water police and is to organize the salvage. When this will take place is still unclear. In any case, a decision on what measures are necessary and what further steps will be taken will be made on June 16. The ship has now been secured with anchors, so there is no blockage on the Danube, and other ships can still pass alongside the stuck freighter. Grounded ship to be lightered
After several failed salvage attempts with a push boat, the work to refloat the ' Fairplay' has been halted. On June 16, a dredger will be brought alongside in order to lighter part of the cargo of iron ore, originating from Rotterdam, until the vessel can be successfully moved. During these works, the Danube will be barred for ship traffic at Regensburg. There was, however, a slight hope that the water level of the river may rise a bit on June 15 due to expected rainfalls.
