Italy and Spain suppport Sumud World Flotilla on its way to Gaza strip
Italy has decided to send a second ship, the firgate 'Alpino' (MMSI: 'Alpino' (MMSI: 247364400 )) to escort the Sumud World Flotilla, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced on Dec 25, 2025. During a briefing with parliamentarians on the flotilla, Crosetto clarified that the government aimeds to prevent any incidents at sea as humanitarian vessels attempted to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip. He also condemned recent attacks on civilian vessels as being completely unacceptable. The organizers had previously reported 12 explosions affecting nine ships in international waters following repeated drone attacks. Following the deployment of the 'Virginio Fasan (F 591)', Crosetto s ordered the dispatch of the 'Alpino', with other capabilities if necessary. Spain also announced on Sep 24 that it would send a ship to support the flotilla, the patrol vessel 'Furor' (MMSI: 224067000 ), which set sail from the Cartagena naval base on Sep 25 with a crew of 50 and eight medical personnel, as well as aerial and surveillance assets. Its mission will be to intervene if the flotilla requires assistance or rescue.
Frigate shot down Houthi drone
On the morning of April 29, the 'Virginio Fasan' reported downing a drone from Yemen. The frigate had recently arrived in the region to take over as the flagship of EU NAVFOR Aspides. While German, Denmark, and Belgium have withdrawn their vessels, Italy has sent a new frigate, which took over as the new flagship of the operation. Italy's Duilio had been leading the operation. The drone was about three miles away when it was downed, as they believed it was heading for an unnamed merchant ship that they were escorting. A missile exploded in the water in the vicinity of the escorted vessel, causing only minor superficial damage.
