Lagos High Court Orders Navy to Release Seized Oil Vessel to Owner
An oil vessel, MT Takoradi, which was arrested about 18 months ago by the Nigerian Navy (NN), was on Thursday, Aug. 8th, 2013 handed over to its owners following the directive from the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos. The ship, which had been in the custody of the NN since January 26, 2012, was arrested for allegedly carrying about one million litres of diesel without the appropriate and licence from the naval authorities.
Seized tanker handed over to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
The Nigerian Navy on May 17. 2012, handed over the seized "Takoradi" to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) in Lagos, for further investigation and prosecution. The "Takoradi" and its 11-member crew were arrested on January 26 for conveying one million litres of diesel without clearance as stipulated in bunkering regulations. Preliminary investigations revealed that the "Takoradi" was initially handled by Greeks until it was handed over to the Nigerian crew on December 10, 2011, at Lagos Anchorage where it remained until January 21, 2012 when she was sailed by the charter NEPS Nigeria Limited to Pennington.
