Collision near Seelze

Sun Feb 07 21:46:06 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Weser", 1180 ts (EU-No.: 04013020), was in collison with the "Elly", 800 ts (EU-No.: 02316526) on the Mittelland Canal near Seelze in the afternoon of Feb 7, 2016. The fire rescue attended with strong forces short past 3 p.m. Both ships suffered bow damage at their respective starboard sides. The "Weser" was enroute to the power plant Stöcken with 1100 tons coal. She suffered two hand size leaks and several breaches with ensuing water ingress. The fire rescue from Lohnde, Dedensen and Seelze was an scene with 62 men, among them five divers. They were able to patch the leaks temporarily. With a submersible pump the water was drained. About 100 tons coal were unloaded with two dredgers onto the shore. Also the "Elly" suffered breaches and dents at the bow. According to first investigations the "Elly" suddenly came perpendicular to the fairway, and the attempt to get clear of the ship failed. Also the canal shores were damaged, and it had to be closed for shipping.
