Dredger evacuated after bomb was found

Wed Oct 26 10:17:39 CEST 2011 Timsen

On Oct 25, 2011, at 12:36, the "Elbe" reported to have found a device strongly resembling a bomb from the Second World War. The object was one meter long and 40 cm in diameter. The "Elbe" was then working 1.6 nautical miles north of Dieppe. The Operations Center of the Navy in Cherbourg, was contacted which alerted the Regional Operational Centre for Surveillance and Rescue (Cross) at Gris-Nez. The Cross organized the evacuation of the crew of the dredger. The master of the vessel remained on board to wait for a team of clearance divers from the Navy. It was winched aboard the dredge by a Dauphin helicopter of the Navy based in Maupertus at 4 p.m., and the dredger was moved to an area of ammunition dump. The two Navy clearance divers managed to open up national bomb and were able to anchor in the area of ammunition depot shortly before 19h. The machine will be destroyed by a favorable weather window by the group of clearance divers.
