Tank barge grounded on the Rhine

On Feb 8, 2018, around 8.30 a.m. the "Eiltank 24" suffered a bottom touch on the Rhine near Birsfelden short after having passed the local lock there. The ship was carrying a cargo of 1.800 tons heavy fuel enroute from Kappel-Grafenhausen to Rotterdam and had sailed from Basel one hour before. After the accident the Rhine traffic in the Basel region had to be barred for a limited time. The tank barge, which had suffered damage, could be secured at the shore by its crew before a fire boat attended. Also te tank barge "Bibo Regio" (MMSI: 269056415) went alongside the stricken ship. An investigation into the accident was launched, taking into consideration the possibility of a navigational mistake.
