DRACO 9335226

Thu Mar 31 23:02:24 CEST 2011 Timsen

On Mar 28, 2011, the "Draco" foiled a pirate attack whilst fishing for tuna around 195 miles off the coast of Tanzania. After the private security on board the Draco managed to prevent seven pirates from attacking the vessel, the captain took the decision to pursue them, which helped the Spanish frigate "Canarias" to arrest them. When the skiff came within 800 meters of the vessel, the security officers began to shoot. They first fired warning shots into the air and then fired warning bursts towards the water until they decided to leave. Upon learning that the Spanish navy vessel was 100 miles away and that in 40 minutes a helicopter would arrive for support, the captain decided to pursue the criminals so they could not get away. In just over two hours, the pirates were arrested by the "Canarias". Aboard the "Draco" were 33 crew members, nine Galician, two Basque and the remainder were African and Israeli, plus four security officers.
