Damage larger than first estimated - Polish master of bargetrain thought to have caused collision
The police launched an investigation against the Polish master of the bargetrain which hit the "Dettmer Tank 87" on the Elbe-Seiten-Canal on Dec 11 at 2 p.m. at canal-km 30 near Vorhop. Both ships were separated from each other the same evening after containers which were threatened to fall into the canal were secured. The ships were taken to moorings at Wittingen and Weißes Moor afterwards. According to the investigations the container barges had passed a curve with such a speed that they got onto the wrong side of the fairway, and the master did not remark the tanker which was approaching him from the opposite direction. Drug tests were negative. The damage caused may be some 100000 Euro.
