Crew member died during rescue operation for missing girl

Tue Sep 30 12:28:06 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Sep 26, a crew member of the ' Det Norske Veritas', Adrian Willyson Brask (36), died during a rescue operation in Lofoten, trying to save another life after an accident of a 33-ft-charter fishing boat of the Nordic Sea Angling, which arranges guided fishing trips to Havøysund, Nappstraumen, Å and Vesterålen. of the Arronet 33 CC type. It had capsized in Nappstraumen in the waterway between the islands of Flakstadøya and Vestvagøya in Lofoten at 12.49 p.m. just outside Vettina. On the vessel, there were four adult tourists, two children and a fishing guide. Six people ,anaged to climb onto keel and were saved, but one young girl, Ebba Torstenson, was still in the water. The 'Det Norske Veritas' sailed from Ballstad at 1.04 p.m., and the rescue helicopter SAR Queen from the Leknes airport was also dispatched. A tourist fishing boat was also at the scene, and in addition the fire department and police were participating in the SAR operation. After the lifeboat arrived on scene at 1:15 p.m., Adrian Willyson Brask dived in to search for the victim inside the wreckage. Two divers from the 330 squadron were already in the water. At 1:32 p.m. It was reported over the phone that Brask wais on board the rescue helicopter. Before, the crew of the "Det Norske Veritas" had started CPR on him as soon as they got him on board At 1:40 p.m. the lifeboat from Svolvær, the 'RS 138-Sundt Flyer' was mobilized. At 1:47 p.m. the rescue company sets up a crisis team. At 2:10 p.m. divers on the "Sundt Flyer" in Svolvær were picked up by the air ambulance that was on its way to the casualty. At 3:00 p.m. the diver from the "Sundt Flyer" was on scene, together with the two divers from the Coast Guard, which also had deployed the 'Jarl' to the scene. At 3:23 p.m. the diver went into the water and confirmed after a short time that the missing person was not inside the capsized boat, which was then towed to the l Lilleeidet marina. This changed the focus of the rescue operation and the Main Rescue Centre requisitions more resources for beach and sector searches. At 3:40 p.m. the "Det Norske Veritas" ended the mission and returned to Ballstad. At 4:26 p.m. the lifeboat 'RS 136-Halvdan Grieg' from Myre headed towards the search area and participated in the search until around midnight ,and started again on the morning of Sep 27. At 6:49 p.m. the police routinely seized the deceased's diving equipment. A search was carried out with a remote-controlled submarine on the night of Sep 27 but the missing person was not found. The body of the 11 year old Swedish girl was finally located along with the lost wheelhouse by the 'Jarl' on Sep 28 at 11.45 a.m. at a depth of 23 meters. The 'Jarl' also assisted the police in raising the wheelhouse and taking care of the deceased. The deceased girl was retrieved with divers, and then the wheelhouse was recovered. The next of kin have been notified and were allowed to come on board the Coast Guard ship. The relatives were given the opportunity to observe when the stretcher was carried ashore by the private soldiers. The wreckage of the boat was lifted ashore on the morning of Sep 27 and was being further examined at the police station in Svolvær. The guide testified that a wave came from behind that caused the boat to go to starboard and crash into the next wave that caused it to capsize and end up upside down. Why the diver died, was not yet clear. Adrian Willyson Brask was a chief mate and an experienced diver in the Norwegian Rescue Service NSSR. He lived in Stord in Sunnhordland. The Accident Investigation Board Norway has been notified and has conducted initial investigations. The police have also conducted forensic examinations. An autopsy has been decided on both deceased, to determine the cause of death. The police have seized the boat, and they have requested assistance to examine the diving equipment of Adrian Willyson Brask. The Rescue Service NSSR will launch an internal investigation to get to the bottom of what actually happened. Repairs of damaged lifeboat completed

Wed May 14 13:05:34 CEST 2025 Timsen

The "Det Norske Veritas" is finally ready for operation after suffering major damage during a demanding rescue operation at Einebærøya outside Stamsund in Lofoten on Jan 26, 2024, in which a fisherman lost his life. Local businesses, emergency services and employees of the Rescue Company worked day and night for 12 days to salvage the lifeboat. 6,000 liters of water were pumped out per minute to keep the boat afloat. It was then lifted up and transported to the GOT shipyard in Mandal, where it was originally built and has now been repaired and upgraded. On May 7, there was a big commemoration and celebration of the lifeboat's return in Ballstad. After extensive upgrades and modernization, it is ready for 20 new years in service and will once again save lives along the coast. Systematic work, dedication and professional competence at the GOT Marine shipyard in Mandal should have a large share of the credit for the boat being able to return to readiness as a state-of-the-art lifeboat. Thanks to the donation in the million-dollar range from the Det Norske Veritas Foundation (DNV), the boat has received new digital maps, radars and echo sounder. The interior has been given a more modern feel and the bathroom on board has been enlarged, so that the crew can rinse and dry suits there.
